テレビの雑学番組などで定期的に話題になるが、相撲が日本の国技であると勘違いされるようになったのは、1909年に両国に建設された常設の相撲小屋にたまたま思い付きで「国技館」という名前を付けたせいである。もしこのとき「国枝館」と名付けていれば、今頃はみんな「相撲は日本の国枝である」と勘違いしていたに違いない。実際には国技館は相撲小屋ですらなく、イベントスペースを併設した焼き鳥工場に過ぎない。しかもこの焼き鳥工場は「両国国技館」と呼ばれながら実際には墨田区両国ではなく墨田区横綱にある。と見せかけて実際には墨田区横網（よこあみ）にある。一体何重に人々を騙せば気が済むのだろう。恐ろしい組織だぜ日本相模協会と見せかけて実際には日本相撲協会。

日本の「国.+」については、法律で決まっているのは国旗・国歌くらいのものらしい。日本大使館の建物や旅券には十六弁の菊花紋が付いているが、これが国章扱いになっているのは慣例的なものらしい（省庁の記者会見で最近デスクに飾られている五七の桐紋も同様）。国鳥（キジ）は日本鳥学会が決めたらしい。国蝶（オオムラサキ）は日本昆虫学会が決めたらしい。国花は何となく桜または菊とされているらしい。地方公共団体では「市の木」が決まっていたりするが、日本の国樹（国木）というのはほとんど聞いたことがないらしい。
