カート・ヴォネガットは、われわれの飽くなき「どうして」の問いに、たったひとこと、”So it goes”（そういうものだ）と答えた。まさにそのようして、世界は回っていて、とくにこれといった理由もなく、洪水は起こり、火山は噴火し、シマウマはライオンに食べられ、せっかく干した洗濯物は雨で濡れてしまう。おそらく、それらはすべて等価であり、人はときになんの脈絡もなく、いきなり幸福になったり、とっさに不幸になったりする。たくさんのできごとが、さしたる必然性や、とくべつな理由もなく起こる。なぜかと訊かれても答えられない。世界はまさに、「そういうもの」だからだ。
